Factors Affecting Rotary Converter Refractory Material Damage
Refractory material quality plays a fundamental role for the service life of rotary converter. Magnesia carbon bricks are universally used in rotary converters now. So the refractoriness, slag corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance of magnesia carbon bricks, magnesia alumina spinel carbon bricks, magnesia alumina carbon ramming mass and magnesia alumina carbon castable will determine corrosion rate and abrasion speed of furnace lining. Except for refractory material quality, other factors which will affect converters service life includes:
- Slag composition. For every percent of ferric oxide increased in slag, the service life of working lining will descend 18~20 times. The higher MgO content is in slag, the lower the corrosion to furnace lining is.
- The higher the tapping temperature is, the lower the service life is. Generally speaking, for temperature above 1600℃, every increasement of 50℃, the service life will be decreased to half.
- The longer the smelting time is, i.e., the longer the blowing smelting time is, the faster the corrosion speed to furnace lining is, service life is in verse proportion to smelting time.
- Intermittent operation. When smelting furnaces stopped working, the temperature is decrease quickly, during reworking, temperature will rise fast, which will induce thermal shock and thermal stress and cause crack and accelerated corrosion, even structural spall, so the service life of furnace lining is significantly shortened.
- When adding iron liquid and raw materials to converter, the furnace will tilt and suffer impaction and scouring, all these factors will cause the not continuous damage of furnace lining, and should be timely patched, or the service life of furnace will greatly decreased.
What should be mentioned is that, refractory materials used in converters are similar between China and Japan, usually magnesia carbon bricks containing 18% of carbon is adopted, but in Europe, 10%~15% carbon containing magnesia carbon bricks are normally used. So if the production load is heavy, steel making tempo is rapid, low carbon content magnesia carbon bricks is a better choice, on contrary, if steel smelting tempo is slow, interval time is relatively longer, higher carbon content magnesia carbon bricks will perform better.
