Refractory Mortar Description
Refractory mortar can be divided into 2 categories by bonding types: air setting and heat setting. Air setting refractory mortar is premixed in wet form and set when exposed to air. Premixed refractory mortar is a blend of aggregate, clay and uses liquid silicate as a binder. Air setting mortar is easy and readily available for various kinds of applications. Heat setting refractory mortar is a blend of aggregates and binders that are not only high temperature resistant, but also are acid-resistant. Heat setting mortar is in the dry form usually packed in bags and needs to be mixed with water during application. The most often used refractory mortars are high alumina and silica refractory mortar for sale.
Refractory Mortar Characteristics
- Easy and readily available for different applications.
- High temperature resistant, acid-resistant.
- Quick setting, high strength.
- High-temperature stability without shrinkage.
- Good slag corrosion resistance.

Refractory Mortar Applications
Refractory mortar is easy to use and readily available for various kinds of applications such as coating and patching of furnace safety linings, setting pre-cast shapes, bonding refractory bricks and high-temperature insulation bricks. High alumina refractory mortars have different applications based on their refractoriness.
- RMA-45 is usually used for trowelling and patching. Mortar forms a strong air-dried bond with all grades of dense refractory, bricks, high-temperature insulation bricks and ceramic fiber blankets, boards, modules.
- RMA-80 refractory mortar is suitable for setting bricks and can also be supplied at a thinner consistency for dipping bricks, coating, and spraying.
- RMA-85 refractory mortar is usually used in steelworks and foundries where high temperatures are encountered, such as setting high alumina bricks for safety linings in pouring ladles and setting bricks and purging nozzles in continuous casting tundishes.
- RMA-90 has higher purity and higher refractoriness and stability for specialized applications such as setting sliding gate plates, purging nozzles, and setting pre-cast shapes.
